It would be nice if at some point the estate released a set of vault tracks that didn't make it only any of the Super Deluxe Editions. A mop up, so to speak. It wouldn't need a theme (like Originals). It could just be: "Songs we left off other sets because there wasn't enought room".

I realize some songs they left off intentionally and unfortunatley aren't likely to make it on to a new set (such as the original Extralovable or Lust U Always because of their lyrics... and maybe stuff from the '98 Crystal Ball because it had recieved an official release).

But I assume other songs like Data Bank and Girl of My Dreams were excluded from the SDE merely because tough choices had to be made to keep the size of the sets reasonable. I'd like a "From the Vault" set that includes stuff like that.

[Edited 10/3/20 10:08am]

We're in a time of extreme political sensitivity regarding the topics of sexual abuse, but do not assume it'll last forever: society changes its focus as time goes (and as things improve, too, hopefully).

It's very likely that in 10 or 15 years, Extra Loveable and Lust U Always can be released and go totally unnoticed.

.

As for the mi-80's material from CB98 it goes without saying that the exact same songs aren't going to be rereleased as such on a compilation of unreleased material since they are, precisely, not unreleased, but most of these songs exist in alternate form (several of which we have on bootlegs), so it's likely these alt. mixes will be released at some point or another.

.

In both case, the point being we need to live old, very old. So quit drinks, drugs, sugar and salt NOW!! lol

The song I'm most upset about being omitted is Databank. That is one of my all time favorites.

I can't see how it didn't make the cut. They know it's a fan favorite. Unless they're holding it back for an Originals Volume 2 or a Graffiti Bridge SDE. But I'm skeptical either of those will come to pass.

While Graffiti Bridge has its devoted fans, as does each of Prince's albums, it was not a commericial or critical success; even those hardcore fans who do like won't have it at the top of their wishlists.

With respect to an Originals Vol. 2, I do think hardcore fans would welcome it, but I don't think there are many (any?) songs left that would be recognizable to the masses. I assume the estate would want at least one or two songs on it that a casual fan would say, "Hey, I know that song!"

I guess the other possibility is that the master tapes for Databank were in bad shape and they didn't think they could produce a viable remaster... but that would surprise me.

Bottom line, the bootleg version I have is pretty good quality, so it's not the end of the world. But I would love to have a perfect copy of Databank.

I have a bootleg version that's has a longer intro with him saying "You know and I know...". Is that what you're referring to? To me, it sounds not only longer but a different mix. It's more dancy. It was labeled "Extended Remix" on the bootleg disc, but I usually ignore the names given to songs on bootlegs because they're so often wrong.

Katrina's Paper Dolls
Make U Mine
Rearrange
Adore
(A 14 minute overdubbed rehearsal take, like he did for the I Would DIe 4 U 12 inch)

Samples of '86 or '87 versions of these tracks have been shared with some recently and the Adore version was shared last year to some. (I didn't get a exact date, only that these were mentioned in a write up on the SOTT SDE as being notable ommisions, given the illogical tracklistings for the set and inclusion of tracks that shouldn't have been on there, according to the person who did the write up, sadly I still don;t have it but the person who did read it mentioned these tracks among other known tracks that should have been on there)
Would have been cool to have these on the SDE instead of a shitty Shep Pettibone filler track, but maybe (except for Adore) these will be on a Parade SDE.

Yeah, I think that's the most obvious thing to cut to make room for more vault material. It's someone else manipulating Prince's work in a way that he must have cared for.

My biggest gripe with this set is probably not including the version of Cosmic Day with Clare Fischer's orchestrations. Particularly with Duane's comments in the booklet, as much as I love the song it feels half finished

Michael Howe said that they left 1/3 of the appropriate tracks off. So that means, what, 20 other songs?

The quote is: "We sent hundreds of tracks for Bernie Grundman to master, and we kind of whittled it down from there. It was a tremendously forensic undertaking. We had to put about a third aside."

I was very excited at first thinking wow ok so there's more stuff already mixes and mastered and ready for release at a later date.

3x15=45.

Then the math don't add-up: how does 60 songs become "hundreds of songs"? eek

Is Mr. Howe making fun of us again?

I don’t remember the original context for the quote exactly, but I feel there should be a paragraph break in there. He send hundreds of songs... maybe for other SDE projects? And of those relevant to SOTT SDE, he set aside 1/3.

I would have liked the two versions of The Sex Of It and Baby Go-Go. Those are probably slated for another Originals if ever released.

Well, "The Sex of It" was written in the middle of 1987, months after SOTT was released. So it belongs more on Lovesexy. In fact, isn't it some of the Lovesexy rehearsals that we heard him teaching the band the song? (Same with "Baby Go Go" on another boot.)

"Baby Go Go" does date to 1986, and seems like an obvious choice. It's also odd that this was sort of a one-off song in some ways. Prince hadn't recorded for days before that, and didn't again for 3 or 4 days after (where he blew out "Data Bank" and "Can't Stop" in the same session on 17Jun1986). DMSR notes it as him "dropping by Sunset Sound" and recording "Baby Go-Go" in a five-hour session. It wasn't necessarily part of any other block of time doing recording. (The Parade Tour was still happening, too).

So while it doesn't seem to have that SOTT sessions synergy, it's certainly from that period in 1986.

We can also add "AND HOW" to that list as it was recorded the same session as "POWER FANTASTIC". For me that is the most important track I hope to see on a next edition of ORIGINALS as we do not have any version besides the 1990 remake by Jevette Steele available and have never heard how Prince originally did it. It has never leaked and is my top pick for ORIGINALS VOL. 2

I'm honestly the most surprised that Eggplant with Wendy's vocals wasn't included, since the version with Prince's vocals was part of it AND they included Lisa's A Place in Heaven in addition to Prince's version. Wendy's version even seems like the more complete, final track. I can't see this popping up on another set either, unlike some other tracks potentially missing. If not here, when? I hope it's not locked up forever. Really strange. (This also goes for Sheila E.'s vocals version of Love and Sex, since the other one is on there.)

The others from SoTT era that I was suprised were missing from the SDE were

Girl O' My Dreams

Data Bank

Can't Stop This Feeling

We Can Funk

Yah, U Know (86 version)

These were recorded smack in the middle of all the other tracks on this release. Why were they missing especially since Soul Psychodelicide was included, being a similar vibe? They arguably could be part of some later Graffiti Bridge release, but they would have seem better placed here, given that they're mostly full Revolution backed tracks. I hope they get a proper release sooner rather than later.

I'm also suprised we didn't get a remastered B-side set release version of Power Fantastic. Same goes for Feel U Up along with the (Long Stroke) version. Maybe on a future Batman release?

Tracks around this mid-Revolution era that I really hope we get on a Parade or ATWIAD SDE release:

Splash

Empty Room

Neon Telephone

Go

Come Elektra Tuesday

Old Friends 4 Sale (original 85 recording both with and without orchestration)

Alexa de Paris

Heaven

Others Here With Us

Plus remastered versions of Girl, Hello, 4 the Tears in Your Eyes

Those songs should have been included in this box set

Have any of you guys emailed Mr. Howe with some of these questions, as they are actually very interesting. If there are so many tracks (on top of the ones that we already know and love that would seem to be better fits than some of the ones chosen) available that they had to whittle things down, than what was guiding their choices? Because from what I'm seeing it can't just be the ability to put together dream factory or crystal ball with the set, because

1. You can't do that with the set alone
2. Why would you release something with the intent of its contents being combined with a release from 22 years ago (that hasn't been remastered ((and does Warner Bros. even have license to those CB sets))

Doesn't make a lot of sense why a major release would be put together under those guiding principles. Love the set, but definitely curious about omissions.

The 14 min version of Adore must be the long version that many assumed was around 20 min. So it does exist, it's beyond me that they didn't include it. I agree, it make no sense to include the Shep Pettibone track instead of some other interesting songs.

I would like to hear that version out of curiosity. Its one of the songs that sound a little muddy in mix but pleasant to have. However like the strings version of Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic...or the horns in Ballad...I wonder if it would not have sound great? I would assume they didnt include that for a good reason.

It is hard to imagine there aren't any edits to the song whatsoever, and the multitrack would have to contain alternate takes or parts that went unused in the mix.
